Howdy! As many of y’all know last year I attended an art school up in Minnesota. There I was a sequential art major. While that major was decently fun, it wasn’t for me. When I transferred to Texas A&M I also transferred into the college of architecture into the Landscape Architecture Major. This is major is perfect for me! And before you ask if this means I am very good at mowing lawns, that’s not what landscape architecture is. To quote Wikipedia “Landscape architecture is the design of outdoor public areas, landmarks, and structures to achieve environmental, social-behavioral, or aesthetic outcomes. It involves the systematic investigation of existing social, ecological, and soil conditions and processes in the landscape, and the design of interventions that will produce the desired outcome. The scope of the profession includes landscape design; site planning; stormwater management; environmental restoration; parks and recreation planning; visual resource management; green infrastructure planning and provision; and private estate and residence landscape master planning and design; all at varying scales of design, planning and management.” You also have to be licensed to practice. So far I’m only in my second studio class for LAND, but I love it!
As far as my minor, I am minoring in Urban Planning. URPN and LAND work so closely together it was an obvious choice for a minor. I love it as well, although some of the law stuff can get monotonous. I am taking one class currently that’s an intro into GIS (Geographical Information Systems Technology) and I love it! The program is a bit tricky, but so far I am doing pretty good (knock on wood)
All the people in my classes have easily become some of the greatest friends I’ve met. We are even starting a flag football team called the Land ShARCHS! I am incredibly happy I decided to switch schools and majors.
