Trip to New Orleans
Howdy! Two weeks ago I was able to drive down to see my grandparents in Slidell, Louisiana. For those who don’t know where that is, it’s a hop, skip, and a jump across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans. A lot like a suburb really. I always love going to visit them! It’s relaxing at their home between good food, talking, and watching westerns. While I am 100% content staying and hanging out in their home all day with them, we do go on the occasional excursion. These can include the French Quarter, Chalmette, Baton Rouge Zoo (only an hour away), Mississippi Gulf Coast, ect. This time, we went to the French Quarter and Chalmette. We also stopped on our way back to Slidell at this bayou. It was very tranquil and pretty!
Chalmette is actually the location of the Battle of New Orlean’s in the War of 1812. It was the last major battle in the war and occurred January 8th- 18th, 1815. This battle brought out major players such as General Andrew Jackson and Famous pirate Jean Lafitte. Another interesting fact about the Chalmette Plantation was this it was owned by the St. Amand brothers, who were prominent people of color and owned several more plantations. Overall, it is an extremely interesting look back at history and a very gorgeous area!
As for food, if you’re in Chalmette you must stop at Rocky & Carlo’s Bar and Grill. Best mac and cheese ever! Although, you may want to split it because the serving size is quite large! And of course, you just can’t go into NOLA and not have beignets! That’s sacrilege!
It was a great trip and much needed break! Oh, I almost forgot the most terrifying part of the trip! When I was driving down, I was on the bridge over the Atchafalaya and a car almost ran me off the bridge!! Thank goodness the other car in the other lane was a more skilled driver and was able to maneuver to give this crazy driver room. Otherwise, both I and the other car would have been hit by this crazy! As some of y’all my know, I have horrible anxiety in cars ever since that wreck I was in, and that certainly did not help!
Overall, it was a great trip and I can’t wait to go visit them again! Laissez les bons temps rouler!
