Welcome, plant nerds of the interwebs! Do you have a plant you want more of, but don’t want to go buy another plant? No worries, you’ve come to the right place! I’m going to share my tips on how to use water propagation on your plants!
I actually tried propagation for the first time ever this last march, and have since doubled my pothos collection. I just bought a plant lamp, and I’m hoping to try propagating more of my plants with it. You can water propagate with lots of different types of plants, and these general rules apply to all plants! I do think Pothos is the easiest one to begin with though. This plant can take a beating.
What is Propagation?
Ok, let’s start off with just going over what plant propagation even is. Propagating a plant means taking the stem or the leaf, and growing it into a new plant. There are three basic ways to propagate:
- In Water
- Air layering
- In Soil
Why Propagate?
- You want more plants!
- Your “mother” plant needs to be pruned
- Baby plants make great gifts for friends and at no expense to you
- You can save a plant through propagation
How to Water Propagate
What you will need:
- Clean Scissors
- A plant
- Glass jar or cup
- Clean Water
- Liquid Fertilizer is a plus
That’s all it takes for water propagation! I haven’t tried propagating succulents in water yet, but plan to try that next, and I will totally share that with y’all too because I believe it’s slightly different than other plants.
If y’all use these tips to propagate your plants, send me pictures of your baby plants! Also, if you want some information on how to care for your plants, check out this post about some of the plants I have in my apartment.
