Howdy, long time no talk! In classic Michelle style, I updated my entire blog and then went MIA for 2 months. I had a good reason though! I needed to study for my landscape architecture licensing exam (check out this post if you want to learn more!). But I am back, and ready to share with all of you Botanical Texans one of my favorite #Dentoning activities: Having a fancy picnic on the Denton Square!
One of my favorite parts about living in Denton is the Historic Denton Square! Pretty much everything in Denton centers around the square. The best restaurants and coolest locally owned shops (plus a really rad landscape architecture firm 😉 ) are all situated around the Historic Square. In the center of the Square is our 100-year-old courthouse that looks like it should be situated somewhere in Europe, not North Texas. Chance are if you’re walking around on the Square during the weekend, you may find yourself dancing to the tunes of a DJ, getting spooked by the Ghost Tour, jamming out to a drum circle, or just petting really cute dogs! With so much going on, it’s no wonder this is one of the most popular spots for a picnic! Since living in Denton, I’ve had several picnics at the Square and wanted to share my picnic recommendations!
Picnic Necessities
Before you have a fancy picnic on the Square you’ll need to gather some supplies:
- Picnic Basket is a must! I found mine for practically nothing at a thrift store.
- Picnic blanket to lay on
- Plates, cups, utensils, napkins (just be sure not to litter!)
- Food! I recommend going to the Ravelin Bakery down the street to get the best bread and pastries you could ever dream of!
- Sparkling Juice or Wine (yes, you can actually drink on the Courthouse lawn – but you can’t get drunk!)
- I recommend adding flowers to your set up for a cottagecore vibe
Best Times for Picnic on the square
If you’re planning a fancy Picnic on the Denton square, then it is essential to plan when you’re going to enjoy a meal like a true Dentonite! Ok, truth be told, whenever you want to have a picnic is the correct time to have a picnic, but there are a few times that I would recommend for optimal enjoyability.
- Weekends from 11:30 – 3 pm: The square is usually alive with activity during these times, but you’ll still be able to find a great spot under Pecan trees to enjoy a picnic
- Fridays 5 – 8 pm: Fridays on the square are always so fun! The historic square is bustling with activity, especially during the warmer months. I recommend having dinner on the square because you’ll really be able to enjoy the atmosphere, people watch, and won’t sweat to death!
- The mornings are another great time if you’re planning to have breakfast at the Square. If you do Saturday morning, I recommend checking out the Denton Community Market beforehand to grab some delicious artisan goods.
I hope after reading about how much fun it is to have a picnic on the Denton Square, you’re now gun hoe to pack yourself a picnic basket and head out to the Square for a picnic of your own! If you live somewhere else, where is your favorite spot to picnic? I’d love to learn about it!
