If you read my post on traveling to Savannah, Georgia, you may have noticed I didn’t mention anything about Tybee Island. Well, that’s because I wanted to dedicate a whole blog post to the Mayberry by the sea (any Andy Griffith fans out there?). If I could own a vacation home anywhere, Tybee Island would make the shortlist! It was incredibly relaxing and ridiculously fun! There are plenty of things to do on Tybee Island. After one day on Tybee, you’ll be wishing you had a beach house too!
Anyways, I’m sure my list of things to do on Tybee Island will be similar to several others, but hopefully, with my witty commentary and superior SEO skills (major sarcasm there), this post pulls ahead on the Pinterest algorithm! With that said, let’s jump into the top things to do on Tybee Island!
Climb the Lighthouse
Y’all. I did this when it was windy and freezing cold outside! Needless to say, my eyes turned into waterfalls from watering so bad. But was it worth it? 100%! You can see the whole island and the Atlantic Ocean! Which, while I have flown over the Atlantic multiple times, I’ve never actually seen it! Plus, if you love history, this lighthouse is not only the tallest in Georgia but also the oldest!
The prices for the lighthouse are:
- Adults: $10
- Seniors: $8
- Children: $8
- Children 5 and under: $Free
- Military: $8
- Coast Guard: $Free
Visit the Beach
I mean you can’t seriously go to an island and not go to the beach, can you? That would be sacrilegious! If I lived near a beach, I think I would become a beach bum. You’d have to tie a rope around me and physically drag me away!
Since it was the dead of winter when I went, there wasn’t anyone on the beaches. However, there were these signs that warned us to stay off the sand dunes because of venomous snake nesting grounds! Don’t worry y’all, there weren’t really snakes (at least I hope not…). I read that the city put these up to keep tourists off the dunes. Whoever came up with that idea, is a genius!
Eat at Arby’s
You know what? I said my list would be similar to every other “Thing’s to do on Tybee Island” list you’ll find on Pinterest, but I was wrong. No one else is going to be suggesting eating at Arby’s, but y’all this Arby’s is so good! I’m an Arby’s fan in general (their salads are a best-kept secret), but this Arby’s was the next level! It was also adorable! I promise you won’t regret eating there!
Visit the Veteran’s Memorial
Right next to Arby’s is a veteran’s memorial. It’s definitely worth walking around and looking at. Plus, they had a pirate flag flying because apparently Tybee was ruled by pirates at one point?
Look at the Architecture
I’m one of those people that enjoys driving around and looking at houses on a Sunday afternoon. Tybee Island was no different. The beach homes were all so adorable, and there was this amazing chapel that had fountains! If you like architecture, take a drive or stroll along the island and look at all the homes!
North Island Shopping
I searched for a while trying to see if I could find the name for this shopping area, but I couldn’t. There are this collection of art and crafts shops (including paint your own pottery place, that if I had a summer home there I would probably be at all the time! Denton, why don’t we have one of these?!). These shops are located around 1209 US Highway 80. The Island Gypsea shop was probably my favorite of the bunch.
Tybean Art & Coffee Bar
Again, if I had a summer place on Tybee, I would 100% do a Coffee Crawl post for this coffee shop! It was adorable! We got our coffees to go, but the coffee was very affordable and tasty. I wish I had bought a mug from the coffee shop as a souvenir! Not sure if I have mentioned it before, but I am collecting coffee mugs from all my favorite coffee shops!
Fort Pulaski National Monument
History & architecture lovers, this one is for you! This fort is located between Tybee and Savannah and is one of the best-preserved forts from the civil war. Yes, it is a confederate fort, which if it makes you uncomfortable to see it, I understand. But if not, then I totally recommend taking a tour! I was personally really fascinated by the landscape and how they made it work for the purpose of the Fort. Plus, we got see canons go BOOM! Is there really anything more fun than that?
Ok, how was my list of things to do on Tybee Island? Did I convince you to go visit? Let me know if you have ever been to the island! Feel free to share this post on Pinterest as well!
